Nearly sold out!
Dorian Noël's illustration for the cover of The Bichir Handbook has just come 3rd place in the Nature Drawing category for the FIIN International Nature Image Festival! Congratulations Dorian!
"I'm a naturalist and scientific illustrator, mainly of fishes. I wanted to thank you for this award, thank you very much, I am really very, very happy! I did this for the cover of a book on African fish by Joshua Pickett, releasing in a few weeks. It's a gouache watercolour, and I did it in two parts, because during the pandemic, I had no way to find larger paper. Then I used digital techniques to put the pieces together. Thank you again for the award and I wish you good luck. Much encouragement for the festival, I hope everything goes very well for you. I send you strong hugs and greetings from Quito. Until next time." - Dorian Noël
The cover illustration is of a Polypterus bichir "Lapradei" and a P. senegalus hunting a Pantodon buchholzi in a tannin stained river margin in Cameroon at dusk.
We had a bichir episode featured on The Aquarium Guys Podcast. "Episode #54 - Bichirs Deep Dive". We talk about husbandry, things to know before you buy, the fossil record, and a deep appreciation for their phallic shape. *Explicit language.
While a little dated, this still holds up as the most comprehensive online care guide you can find for Polypterus. (Updates and changes are logged in the video's comment section).
Thankfully, bichirs aren't very aggressive towards eachother, due to their relatively passive disposition; there are however, some exceptions.
This method might be a good way for you to remember and honour your recently lost pet bichir with; alternatively, preserving bichirs, allows people to inspect them closer than usual—making it a valuable tool for education.
Not quite a bichir, but a valuable care video which covers just what exactly African Arowana are and everything you need to know about their husbandy.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, postage prices outside of Europe have seen an inflation. We apologise for the inconvenience, and hope the low cover price negates some of this cost.
